Who am I?

My name is Stephen. For more than 10 years, I was an active member of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) church in Sri Lanka. I served the church as an associate youth director, and a member of the executive committee.  I was also a young adult Sabbath school teacher and lay preacher.

I came to realize from my early days that members in the church were confused about the gospel. The church didn’t teach me the gospel either, but I grew in my understanding of it over the years through personal study.

As I grew in my understanding, I made it my passion to share the gospel with SDA’s, others and present SDA doctrines in a Christ centered manner. Not just that. I believed the SDA church was a Bible based church and was the movement entrusted for truth for the last days. For 8 years, I defended its beliefs at my blog site: www.everlasting-gospel.blogspot.com

To my surprise, when I began restudying the old and the new testaments, verse by verse, chapter by chapter (not proof texting with an agenda to prove one’s preconceived beliefs), and especially the covenants God made with His people, I rediscovered that Adventist truth is far from the Bible truth. I also rediscovered the gospel of Jesus Christ more fully and clearly.

There are godly Christians living in the SDA church who have put their trust in Jesus to save them, but many are confused about the gospel, and the new covenant. They do not know or believe that Christ’s sacrifice is the only sufficient blood payment for our sins, and when we repent for our sins, and our inability to save ourselves, and accept Jesus as Savior and Lord, we are born again, Christ comes into our life, He gave us eternal life, we were sealed with the Holy Spirit, and empowered to live in the Spirit, and become more and more like Jesus.

Majority of the Adventists seek to save themselves by complying to a few laws (viz.  ten commandments, the sabbath, tithes & diet but are ignorant of many other moral commandments. They claim to keep ‘ALL’ the commandments but teach and believe in a very narrow view of sin, law and righteousness like the religious leaders of Jesus’ day. See: God’s Moral Law is Unchangeable.

I was a proud ‘Sabbath keeper’,  but when I read the Bible, I found that neither I nor any Adventist for that matter was properly observing all the Sabbath laws properly. We were happy to pick and choose laws from the Old Covenant, and then we had a spirit of pity and condemnation for those who did not follow our Sabbath practices. We were hypocrites. Gospel ignorance has also blinded Adventists to the new covenant law of love: loving Jesus supremely, and others sacrificially: a law that is expressed beyond ten commandments, and observing a ritual day. See: Ten Commandments: Does it Cover all Sin?

Of course, these things are not uncommon among conservative Christians, however, the issue in the SDA church stem from its belief system. Many SDA’s are blinded to Christ’s all-sufficient sacrifice, and the higher standard of law and righteousness in the new covenant as they base an entire belief system on the old covenant, which God  has declared obsolete, when He established the new covenant (Hebrews 8:6-13).

No church is perfect. There is legalism in many other churches (elsewhere licentiousness), but when a church teaches a man-centered, works-based, gospel-absent, Christ-less, old covenant-backed obsolete message, it is time to leave it and expose it.

I truly feel sorry for many SDA’s for missing the gospel of Jesus Christ and for being misguided by false theology. SDA’s are very confident they are the remnant church, like the Mormons and the Jehovah’s Witnesses. However, their teachings are full of errors, and inconsistencies. My hope and prayer is that the SDA church will reform, and bring its teachings more in line with the gospel, and the Bible.

This blog is mainly to share my new faith, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. I also intend to share how I viewed and defended certain SDA beliefs, and why I can no longer do so.

    Hi John,

    Have just recently started to read your site and am very impressed so far with the clarity of thought and the great way you explain things. I have found others sites on the net which are also very good but yours is one of the best I have found. Praise God for how he is using you to remove the scales from the eyes of our SDA friends and family, and to shed light on the the true gospel of Jesus.

    My wife and I have been searching the scriptures and websites which talk about these issues for the last five years after a conviction by God that there was something fundamentally incorrect with the exclusive SDA doctrines, along their interpretation of the Law and the Sabbath.

    I had been an SDA for about 35 years (My wife longer than that) but in the last twelve years we have recognised problem areas within SDA belief and practice. After discovering and understanding what Paul says about the Old and New Covenants and researching the inconsistencies between EGWhite and the Bible, we can no longer agree with SDA interpretation on many subjects.

    It’s a blessing to be New Covenant Christians rejoicing in the completed work of Jesus.

    We have many friends and family within SDA whom we will recommend your site to.

    We recently subscribed to gospel reflections so am keen to read more posts and to finish reading your site (which will take a little while).

      You share good news! 🙂 It is wonderful to see how the Lord has been leading you and your wife out of Adventism. It takes a miracle from God to be rescued from adventism. But the Lord surely and slowly does it. Praise God!

      I am glad you find the material on my site useful. By the way, what were the conviction points you had when it came to the Sabbath? Adventists struggle with the idea of Sabbath being a ritual law, and no longer binding given their preconceived ideas about what is moral and ceremonial, and the ten commandments.

      Again! Powerful testimony. 🙂

        Hi John,

        After we left an SDA church plant in 2013 we had a small bible study group operating out of our home for about a year. During this time we researched the web for ex adventist opinion on “why people had left the SDA denomination” and found a number of excellent sites with credible information. One of those was at:

        Chapter 17 to 23 at this site (green column) covers the Sabbath quite extensively (along with the 160 questions about the Sabbath from the same site). This site provided convincing information for us that the Bible viewed the Sabbath different to how SDA view it. Further research, and coming to an understanding of the Old and New Covenants put the “nail in the coffin” for the SDA view of the Sabbath, for me. This understanding came over a period of time after checking with the Bible and confirmation from the Holy Spirit.

        Even as recent as last night I was chatting with my Dad (who is entrenched in SDA interpretation and believes we have “lost our way”) and it is evident that many (my dad included, though not all SDA’s that we know) believe leaving the SDA church equates with leaving God, and not keeping the Sabbath equates with losing your salvation. So sad that exclusive SDA doctrine (based largely upon Ellen White) and the Old Covenant SDA view on Law and Sabbath has brought confusion into the minds of many about the True Gospel.

        Thankfully, as the Holy Spirit “removes the veil” (2 Cor 3:13-17) from the spiritual eyes of SDA family and friends (those open to the spirit’s influence), then clarity on the Gospel will increase.

        Your site helps to do this, so I will be recommending it to “searching” friends in the future.

        Thanks again for the spirit inspired insight on your website. It is a great resource and will provide a positive benefit in the lives of many who are ready for a modern day reformation.

    I havent been on F/book for ages. Was delighted to read both John Mendis & Michael Pages comments. I too felt oppressed with SDA doctrines on many subjects and have moved to a Christian based alternative church that focuses on love support and community involvement with elderly, youth, and familes. I no longer feel shackled by SDA expectations of my Christian journey which have controlled me since my baptism at 17 years of age. I am now 73 and at peace with my walk with Jesus.     Brother Stephen, Since someone sent me to your website and i note what you wrote above, may i ask a couple of questions? 1. Since there was a test in Eden to have eternal life, what is the end time test for us to re-enter? 2. What is the little book in Revelation 10, and what is that all about–has it been fulfilled?

      Regarding the questions:

      1. Since there was a test in Eden to have eternal life, what is the end time test for us to re-enter?

      Just like God made it clear to Adam and Eve what was the test, the answer to the above question would be found clearly in the words of Jesus. In Heb.1:1-2 we are told that God, after He spoke long ago to the fathers in the prophets in many portions and in many ways, but in these last days has spoken definitively in the Son. The answer does not come from symbolic passages in scriptures that only a special group of people in the end times has been made privy to spin an interpretation on. God has spoken to us in these last days definitively in the Son. The test is clear and simple; it is whether we have put our faith in Christ.

      John 3:18 He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

      1 John 5:11 And the testimony is this, that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son.

      1 John 5:13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life.

      The sign or evidence of our faith is:

      Jesus said that the sign by which the world would know we are his people was our visible love for each other (Jn.13:35).

      John 13:35 “By this all men will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

      2. What is the little book in Revelation 10, and what is that all about–has it been fulfilled?

      John went to the mighty angel and asked for the scroll. Promptly, the mighty angel gave him the scroll and commanded him to eat it. He told John it would make his stomach bitter but it would taste as sweet as honey. Revelation and this chapter is highly figurative language. John’s actions and reactions here are meant to symbolize important spiritual ideas. Nothing much is revealed in Revelation regarding this little book, so without speculating that this represents some experience faced by a last day church or movement, or some hidden message or book that is unsealed (remember God has spoken to us in Christ Jesus in these last days), we must consult other passages of Scripture for its usage.

      In the Old Testament the prophet Ezekiel received a command to deliver God’s message to rebellious Israel (Ezekiel 2:3–4). Upon receiving this command Ezekiel saw a hand stretched out to him, and a scroll was in the hand (Ezekiel 2:9). “Eat this scroll, and go, speak to the house of Israel,” the Lord said (Ezekiel 3:1). When he ate the scroll, Ezekiel found that it tasted as sweet as honey (Ezekiel 3:3), but later he experienced bitterness (Ezekiel 3:14).

      God’s Word contains both a sweet message and a bitter message; both mercy and judgement. The prophet Jeremiah testified: “Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart” (Jeremiah 15:16). The message of reconciliation and forgiveness is sweet, but the message of condemnation is bitter. The gospel is sweet to those who embrace it, but bitter to those who reject it. John’s eating of the scroll, then, carries the same symbolism as it did for Ezekiel. John is “taking on” the message of God in order to carry it to others. Knowing that the message is one of mercy for some is sweet, and judgment and destruction for others is bitter.

      God has instructed through Paul that “if we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, he is to be accursed!” (Gal. 1:8). So, whatever the message Revelation 10 angel has to share, it is not contrary to the message spoken by Jesus.

      Revelation is a challenging book with lots of symbolism. Some sects have elevated obscure and easily-misunderstood passages in the book of Revelation to a position of prime importance to their church. Unfortunately, such haphazard reading into the text, and fitting certain ad hoc events in history to fit one’s agenda and preconceived ideas is unwarranted.

      If you have a better explanation, I like to hear a verse by verse exegesis of Rev chapter 9, 10, 11 and let me know if it’s fulfilled or not?

        the general reading of revelation by many is to avoid giving specificity to events described by John in fear of being wrong

        Yet John states clearly ,that the book is a prophecy ,showing things which have taken place, things taking place , things yet take place
        John uses symbolic language borrowed from the whole bible

        however most reading is to be general and avoid concrete conclusions

        Revelation 10 has the Personage of Jesus coming with a message to John…

        .2 He was holding a little scroll, which lay open in his hand(greek tense suggest scroll had now been opened). He planted his right foot on the sea and his left foot on the land, 3 and he gave a loud shout like the roar of a lion. When he shouted, the voices of the seven thunders spoke. 4 And when the seven thunders spoke, I was about to write; but I heard a voice from heaven say, “Seal up what the seven thunders have said and do not write it down.”

        John hears something and does not write it for us….SO John understood it but was told do not write it

        I notice you went to Ezekiel to understand bitter sweet scroll and meaning of eating a scroll
        similarly study carefully the portrait of Jesus in Revelation 1 and chapter 10……and the portrait of the Personage in Daniel 10 verses 5-6.and Daniel 12.Thats Jesus

        Daniel 12..7 The man clothed in linen, who was above the waters of the river, lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time. When the power of the holy people has been finally broken, all these things will be completed.”

        Daniel was told….. ….verse 9 .“Go your way, Daniel, because the words are rolled up and sealed until the time of the end.

        twice these words are used verse 4 and verse 9

        verse 4. But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end

        Surely can we willingly ignore the portrait of Jesus in Daniel 12 ,..who ……lifted his right hand and his left hand toward heaven, and I heard him swear by him who lives forever, saying, “It will be for a time, times and half a time”……..the little scroll is sealed or closed until TIME OF THE END

        In revelation 10..5 Then the angel whom I saw standing on the sea and on the land raised his right hand to heaven, 6 and swore by Him who lives forever and ever, who created heaven and the things in it, and the earth and the things in it, and the sea and the things in it, that there will no longer be a delay, ……NO MORE TIME!

        can we ignore the comparisons of the messages from Daniel 12 and revelation 10?

        what was sealed in Daniel ?

        what message in DANIEL pertained to TIME OF THE END?

        read Daniel 8:17…… “Son of man, understand that the vision pertains to the time of the end.”

        read Daniel 8:..19 And he said, “Behold, I am going to inform you of what will occur at the final period of the indignation, because it pertains to the appointed TIME OF THE END.

        read Daniel 8:26 “The vision of the evenings and mornings that has been given you is true, but seal up the vision, for it concerns the distant future.”

        seal up the evening and morning message(vision ,mareh) of 2300 day prophecy …roll it up in a scroll. UNTIL DISTANT FUTURE,UNTIL TIME OF THE END,UNTIL APPOINTED TIME OF END

        Sadly I saw you insert antiocus epipanes on a Daniel 8 message which concerns time of the end, appointed time of the end and you ended Daniel 8 s sealed 2300 day prophecy in BC 171 hence the sealed scroll of Daniel is meaningless to many people if they lock in to antiocus and pretend thats the time of the end

        Clearly Daniel starts to worn us of a sealed message in Daniel 8:26 and he repeats it in Daniel 12:4 and 9

        what could be more clearer than this ?… But you, Daniel, roll up and seal the words of the scroll until the time of the end

        sealing a message in Daniel 8 and 12 means IT CANNOT BE UNDERSTOOD until such a designated time of the end

        revelation 10 has a clear allusion to opening of a scroll by a BEING whose characteristics are seen in Daniel 10:4-6 who swears similarly as was Daniel 12 and revelation 10 and then says THERE WILL BE NO MORE TIME

        In Daniel 12 there was time, times and half a time before the events in sealed message could occur or even understood yet in revelation 10 THERE WILL BE NO MORE TIME or delay.

        the revelation 10 message is closer to seventh trumpet sounding which is closer to close of probation ….“There will be no more delay! 7 But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets.”

        First of all lets do justice to the text itself and not leave it half done……John in revelation 10 does the Ezekiel role of playing the role of the saints who are to receive the message carried by the mighty angel,John receives the message which is from a scroll and is told eat it.This means read and understand ,we know John Himself understood the message but God DID NOT UNSEAL it for readers

        A call is made to prophecy again after John experiences bitter sweet experience

        WHY PROPHECY AGAIN?..WHAT HAS BEEN misunderstood during the eating of the scroll?

        WHY PROPHECY AGAIN?…AGAIN?

        the scroll of Daniel 12:4 and 9 and Daniel 8:26 is clearly the one being unsealed in revelation 10 but still will not be understood by the readers who will experience a bitter sweet experience

        John after the eating of the scroll is told..I was given a reed like a measuring rod and was told, “Go and measure the temple of God and the altar, with its worshipers. 2 But exclude the outer court; do not measure it, because it has been given to the Gentiles.

        symbolic language is not to be taken lightly ……..the measuring process does COUNT THE WORSHIPERS TOO.

        Any way ,the book of Daniel starts to flood the book of revelation after revelation 10….the 1260 days of prophecy from Daniel springs up in revelation 11 and 12 and 13

        the beasts of Daniel starts to show up in revelation 12 and 13

        is it possible a strong anti adventist approach also blinds us to see certain texts in their fullness as we mount a massive anti Adventism approach more than we allow the text to speak to us ?

        I mean how could you possibly place antiocus Epiphanes as “TIME OF THE END” in BC 171?

        after reading your Daniel exposition it was sweet in the mouth ,but when I swallowed some bits it was bitter ,we need to prophecy again I am afraid

    I was told many years ago that the SDA Church was a wolf with a really thick sheep skin as they appear to be very evangelical in their approach to other Christians. More dangerous than any other cult. I have friends that are in the Reformed SDA and they are extreme in the observance of the Sabbath and the dietary laws. From what I understand from the SDA position is no salvation if you are a “Sunday keeper” as thus is the mark of the Roman Roman church and they are the beast and therefore you will be condemned by God by attending a Sunday keeping church.

    SDAs twist the Scriptures to support their teachings. There’s no Sabbathkeeping, tithing,or
    Investigative Judgment in John 3:16. The 2300 days were literal and not prophetic, so 1844
    is not Biblical. OT tithing was over agricultural products for the Levites and not about money.
    There is no NT tithing taught by the apostle Paul. The repentant thief on the cross was promised eternal life by Jesus without an IJ, Sabbathkeeping, etc. We must correctly interpret and follow the Bible- not add to it! All cults believe they are the true church and are
    infallible in their teachings, not to mention critical of other churches. Stay away from them.

    I was drawn to your website by the study of revelation so i feasted on some chapters but i felt guilty not to share too

    Revelation 4 and 5 you concluded ..You said…”So, what do we have here in Chapter 5? As we get that look behind the curtain that separates heaven and earth, we see reality. We see that despite present appearances in the world that we experience, not only in Chapter 4 is God actually on the throne and sovereign over all, but Chapter 5 tells us He has a plan that He is carrying out through the person of Jesus to bring judgment to an evil world, to vindicate the righteous and to bring new heavens and new earth. That plan will be unfolded”……..

    .Look again at chapter 4 and 5 .Its not a random view of heaven worship but has internal evidence of place and event which can be identified

    Place …..This is a view of heaven and you have correctly described fantastic details
    We are in God s temple and the glory of God fills the temple

    Gods throne has ONE person seated on it who John CANNOT VIEW and live.God the Father

    IN front of the Father is the HOLY SPIRIT.i like the way you describd it and You said ” The seven spirits as discussed in chapter 1 are the one Holy Spirit represented under the symbolism of a seven-fold or complete manifestation of his person. The lamps of fire are important because the Holy Spirit is not ordinarily visible. To become visible, He represents Himself in a physical form like a dove or a tongue of fire.”

    did you notice that the lamps of fire(HolySpirit)(seen in heaven in chapter 4:5) are sent to the lampstand (seen on earth in chapter 1:12 ) and the sending of the Lamps(HOLY SPIRIT) is in chapter 5:6?(read last part of verse 6 in chapter 5)

    the vision of chapter 4 and 5 shows the movement of the HOLY SPIRIT from being IN FRONT OF THE THRONE(revelation 4:5) and to being SENT TO EARTH(revelation 5:6)

    the vision of chapter 4 and 5 shows The Father alone on the throne (chapter 4:3) and then we see the SON joining the FATHER iN CHAPTER 5:6.MEANWHILE the HOLY SPIRIT departs to the earth in same chapter 5:6

    we are viewing PENTECOST events in heaven in symbols with pre arrival of Jesus scene being chapter 4 (God the Father on throne alone and HOLY SPIRIT in front of the throne IN HEAVEN not yet deployed to earth) and revelation 5 being Christs arrival and inauguration as Priest(anointed with seven eyes=Holy Spirit) and as King (seven horns) to sit on right hand of Father while HOLY SPIRIT is then SENT TO EARTH(see last part of verse 6 chapter 5)

    the 7 lampstands(CHURCHES) we see in chapter 1:12 is incomplete without the seven SPIRITS OF GOD OR SEVEN BURNING LAMPS which should sit on the lampstand and yet are seen being IN FRONT OF THE THRONE in chapter 4:5 until deployment on chapter 5:6

    in exodus 25 while reading verse 38 we were seeing the COMPLETION OF A CONSTRUCTION OF A LAMPSTAND BY THIS ACTION…By placing lamps on lampstand.37 “Then make its seven lamps and set them up on it(lampstand) so that they light the space in front of it
    the Church was left incomplete when Jesus ascended to heaven and there was need to send another COMFORTER to equip them for function.PENTECOST in symbols is the VERY ACT OF PLACING LAMPS ON LAMPSTANDS

    the symbols in the model sanctuary of Moses pointed to a function by Jesus….Christ was to leave His church on earth(see revelation 1:12) and ascend to heaven and then place the HOLY SPirit ON THE CHURCH after receiving the GIFT from the Father..Revelation 4 shows us the Father in heaven with the HOLY SPIRIT yet to be sent to earth in chapter 4:5 until Christ arrives in chapter 5

    PENTECOST in symbols is the VERY ACT OF PLACING LAMPS ON LAMPSTANDS and placing seven horns and seven eyes on the LAMB and then the LAMB sits at the right hand of Father

    what we see arriving in ACTS 2 are the seven burning lamps(HOLY SPIRIT) lighting the candlestick(church)

    Where in the sanctuary can Jesus place LAMPS ON LAMPSTANDS ?

    Where in the sanctuary CAN LAMPS BE IN FRONT OF THE THRONE?(reVELATION 4:5)

    the LAMPS are in front of the table of showbread ……..what is the symbolic meaning of the Bread of His presence ?

    What was the meaning of the table of showbread?

    we have seen how Jesus fulfilled the altar of burnt offering symbolism…..CALVERY

    we have seen how Jesus fulfilled the completion of lampstand with lamps to light the earth with the GOSPEL PENTECOST

    what about table of showbread?…what did it represent?

    John is NOT SILENT about it in revelation 4:5..

    can you show me a place in the sanctuary where lamps are in front of the throne ?

    i cannot see the ark of covenant in chapter 4 and so where are we there ?

    we are to use the imagery being used by John and not wrestle with whats being shown to us ….

    If Christ is behind the VEIL(as many claim he must be in the MOST HOLY PLACE) in chapter 5 how come he then place lamps on lampstands which is the main activity in chapter 4 and 5

    the honest truth is we have NEVER UNDERSTOOD the table of showbread hence we are comfortable racing to the MOST HOLY PLACE without blinking an eyelid

    we assume hebrews 6:19 takes us behind the second veil. yet revelation 4 and 5 is clearly within the first veil which allows Christ to place lamps on lampstands

    Revelation 11:19 is timed to show US the Father in the MOST HOLY PLACE but in revelation 4 and 5 where are we with HONESTY?

    How can we burn incense on altar of incense in chapter 8:3-5 and remain in MOST HOLY PLACE?

    How can we sit on table of showbread in revelation 4:5 and remaIn in MOST HOLY PLACE?

    How can we place lamps on lampstands in revelation 5:6 and remain in MOST HOLY PLACE ?

    JOhn in revelation 4 and 5 is SHOWN “HOW CHRIST SAT ON HIS Father THRONE”after calvary at PENTECOST which was an event which had ALREADY TAKEN PLACE before John was taken to Patmos

    i have not dealt with His arrival in heaven…John does not deliberately exclude thousands of angels in chapter 4 and then just added them in chapter 5 when Christ arrived ..the truth is the angels had gone out to escort him from earth and hence He arrives escorted and praise erupts when he answers the question and enters with a myriad of angels

    i will leave you to contend when was ephesians 4:8 fulfilled .If Christ took the resurrected saints(HE TOOK CAPTIVES WITH HIM TO HEAVEN) at day 40 then the 24 elders are beings already in heaven waiting for His arrival and the crowns they wear does not explain why there are already in heaven before Jesus arrived

    If calvary secured the whole universe from ever falling again then even angels OWE Jesus their victory over satan

    They with us share in Christ’s victory.They can sing “HE HAS MADE us Preists and kings”
